Radial Velocity Variability of Field Brown Dwarfs

چکیده
We present paper six of the NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey, an analysis of multi-epoch, highresolution (R ∼ 20,000) spectra of 25 field dwarf systems (3 late-type M dwarfs, 16 L dwarfs, and 6 T dwarfs) taken with the NIRSPEC infrared spectrograph at the W. M. Keck Observatory. With a radial velocity (RV) precision of ∼2 km s, we are sensitive to brown dwarf companions in orbits with periods of a few years or less given a mass ratio of 0.5 or greater. We do not detect any spectroscopic binary brown dwarfs in the sample. Given our target properties, and the frequency and cadence of observations, we use a Monte Carlo simulation to determine the detection probability of our sample. Even with a null detection result, our 1σ upper limit for very low mass binary frequency is 18%. Our targets included seven known, wide brown dwarf binary systems. No significant RV variability was measured in our multi-epoch observations of these systems, even for those pairs for which our data spanned a significant fraction of the orbital period. Specialized techniques are required to reach the high precisions sensitive to motion in orbits of very low-mass systems. For eight objects, including six T dwarfs, we present the first published high-resolution spectra, many with high signal to noise, that will provide valuable comparison data for models of brown dwarf atmospheres.

Multiplicity , kinematics and rotation rates of very young brown dwarfs in Cha
We have studied twelve very young (1–5Myr) bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I star forming region in terms of their kinematic properties, the occurrence of multiple systems among them as well as their rotational characteristics. Based on high-resolution spectra taken with UVES at the VLT (8.2m), radial and rotational velocities have been measured. A kinematic study of the sample ...
متن کاملBinary frequency of very young brown dwarfs at separations smaller than 3 AU ⋆
Searches for companions of brown dwarfs by direct imaging probe mainly orbital separations greater than 3–10 AU. On the other hand, previous radial velocity surveys of brown dwarfs are mainly sensitive to separations smaller than 0.6 AU. It has been speculated if the peak of the separation distribution of brown dwarf binaries lies right in the unprobed range. The present work for the first time...
متن کاملUVES spectra of young brown dwarfs in Cha I: radial and rotational velocities
Based on high-resolution UVES spectra we found that the radial velocity (RV) dispersion of nine of twelve known young bona fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Cha I dark cloud is 2.0 kms, i.e. significantly smaller than the RV dispersion of T Tauri stars in Cha I (3.6 km/s) and only slightly larger than the dispersion of the surrounding molecular gas (1.2 km/s) (Mizuno et al. 1999). This res...

We have obtained radial velocities of a sample of 18 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the interval M6.5–T8 using high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC and the Keck II telescope. Among our targets there are two likely field stars of type late M, one M6.5 Pleiades brown dwarf, and fifteen L and T likely brown dwarfs of the solar neighborhood with estimated masses in ...
متن کاملThe statistics of accelerations seen in radial velocity searches for planets
Radial velocity searches for extrasolar planets have discovered stars undergoing slow accelerations. The accelerations are likely due to one or more gas giant planets or brown dwarfs orbiting with period longer than the total time span of observations. The stellar acceleration is proportional to the mass of the companion divided by the square of its radius from the star. In this paper we predic...
